Find your way to start

A lot of people will be out and about during the whole week of Göteborgsvarvet and there will be lots of congestion so remember to have plenty of time to spare when planning your trip and transportation routes. Don´t forget, the distribution of race bibs is held at Göteborgsvarvet Expo (Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre).

During the entire week leading up to the Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon there will be several races taking place between 15-20 May 2018 that are organized by Göteborgs Friidrottsförbund (Gothenburg’s Track and Field Assiciation). Below is a day by day guide on how you can get around during the entire week of racing festivities. We strongly recommend that you take public transportation, bike, or walk whenever possible. Tuesday May 15th

The first race to kick off Göteborgsvarvet week of festivities is Trailvarvet (Trail Race). The start and finish line are at Björngårdsvillan in Slottsskogen Park. If you are taking public transportation to this event choose stops Linnéplatsen or Botaniska Trädgården. Parking is available for a fee of 50 SEK (compensation fee for carbon footprint) beside of Slottsskogsvallen on the large gravel field. Please adhere to the race officials and volunteers directions when parking. Race bibs can be picked up in the starting area.

Wednesday May 16th

Stafettvarvet (Relay Race) has it starting and finishing line by Björngårdsvillan, Slottsskogen Park. If you are taking public transportation to the Relay Race, choose stops Linnéplatsen or Botaniska Trädgården (the start is by Björngårdsvillan). Parking is available for a fee of 20 SEK (compensation fee for carbon footprint) beside of Slottsskogsvallen on the large gravel field (Dalens grusplaner). Please adhere to the race officials and volunteers directions when parking. Race bibs and snack boxes can be picked up at the starting area.

Thursday May 17th – Exhibition starts!

The distribution of Göteborgsvarvet’s race bibs is held at Göteborgsvarvet Expo (Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre).

The exhibition Göteborgsvarvet Expo opens at the Svenska Mässan (Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre) in central Gothenburg at Korsvägen (beside of Gothia Towers Hotel), open times Thursday are from 10:00am-9:00pm. We encourage Göteborgsvarvet runners to use public transportation and as a half marathon runner you may use your race bib as your ticket to ride free on all forms of public transport in the Gothenburg area including the commuter train to and from Alingsås, Ale, and Kungsbacka (18-20 May). If you haven´t picked up your race bib yet then the proof of registration that you use to retrieve your bib will also work as your free public transport ticket. Scan your QR code at the top of your confirmation of registration to receive free entrance to the Göteborgsvarvet Expo.

If you are traveling by car we recommend that you park in the city at one of the following parking places (Fokus P-Hus, Valhalla, Tomtegatan P-Hus, Fabriksgatan/Gårdaskolan, John at Gårdas gata P-Hus, Ullevi Parking Garage, Lorensberg P-Hus, Heden Engelbrektsgatan, Stensturegatan, Skånegatan P-Hus and Liseberg Södra. Friday May 18th

The exhibition Göteborgsvarvet Expo is open to visitors from 10:00 am – 10:00 pm. The distribution of Göteborgsvarvet’s race bibs is held at Göteborgsvarvet Expo (Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre).

Specialvarvet is organized in Slottsskogen Park and participants can pick up their race bib at the start area. If you are taking public transportation to the Specialvarvet, choose stops Linnéplatsen or Botaniska Trädgården (the start is by Björngårdsvillan). Parking is available for a fee of 50 SEK (compensation fee for carbon footprint) beside of Slottsskogsvallen on the large gravel field (Dalens grusplaner). Those arriving by bus should park in Slottsskogen Park. Drive in through Slottsskogen Park’s south entrance and follow the directions of the race officials and volunteers.

We encourage half marathon runners picking up their race bib at Göteborgsvarvets Expo to use public transportation and you may use your race bib as your ticket to ride free on all forms of public transport in the Gothenburg area including the commuter train to and from Alingsås, Ale, and Kungsbacka (18-20 May). If you haven´t picked up your race bib yet then the proof of registration that you use to retrieve your bib will also work as your free public transport ticket. Show your race bib to also receive free entrance to the Göteborgsvarvet Expo.

Saturday May 19th

Take public transportation, bike or walk if possible and remember to leave out in plenty of time, there are lots of people out and about. It may take longer than usual. Remember to pick up you race bib downtown at Göteborgsvarvet Expo before you go to start.

Runners in Cityvarvet pick up their race bib and t-shirt at Göteborgsvarvet Expo. Make sure to be in time! It´s a short walk, 15 minutes from the expo to the start at Götaplatsen.

Göteborgsvarvet – If you have NOT picked up your race bib

Runners arriving by car from out of town – Åby Travbana

Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon has arranged parking for cars at Åby Travbana (1500 parking spaces).  What’s new for this year’s race is that RVs and caravans can park at Valhalla IP (see below). Note that there will be a bus that takes you nonstop to the Göteborgsvarvet Expo (Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre, Korsvägen beside of Gothia Towers Hotel) where runners can pick up their race bibs. From here runners can take public transportation to the starting line. After the race there will be a bus that will take you back to the Åby parking lot. Runners will be picked up at the temporary bus stop called Magretebergsmotet.

The parking at Åby Travbana is open Saturday May 19th and will be open from 8:00am- 8:00pm for incoming and outgoing traffic. To compensate for the carbon footprint each car will pay Åby Travbana an environmental fee or compensation fee of 50 SEK. Please have cash.

Runners that are coming from out of town by bus or RV/Caravan- Valhalla IP

If you are planning on coming by bus or RV/Caravan then you may park at Valhalla IP (near Scandinavium). There is free parking for buses. RV/Caravans pay an environmental fee/compensation fee of 100 SEK to compensate for their carbon footprint.  You can pick up your race bib at the Göteborgsvarvet Expo (Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre), from there runners can go straight to the starting line with public transportation and back to Valhalla IP when the race is over (free public transportation when you show your race bib or proof of registration). The buses should not be moved after the runners pick up their start number or race bib. They should stay parked in the parking lot until the race is over.

Göteborgsvarvet- For those of you who have already picked up your race bib or start number

Runners who already have picked up their race bibs – go direct to the start area. We recommend you take public transportation or bike. If you plan on biking there is a place to park your bikes at the large gravel parking lot (Dalens grusplaner) near Slottsskogsvallen. The tram and bus stops that are close to the start/finish area are stops Marklandsgatan, Botaniska and Linnéplatsen. Your race bib or proof of registration will allow you to ride all public transportation free of charge during 18-20 May in Gothenburg area including the commuter trains to Alingsås, Ale and Kungsbacka.

Buses and Trams that take you to the start and finish area on May 19th:

  • From Korsvägen- free shuttle buses direct to Botanical Gardens (Botaniska Trädgården), tram number 6,7,8, and 13 also buses 16 and 52
  • From Central Station- Trams 7 and 13
  • From Lilla Bommen- Trams 1 and 6 also buses 25, ROSA Express and BLÅ Express
  • From Järntorget- Trams 1 and 6 also buses 25, ROSA Express and BLÅ Express

To find out the time schedules of all buses and trams during the Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon we recommend you to go into the local public transportation site vasttrafik.se or by using the app Reseplaneraren (will be updated one week before the race).

If you are taking the car to the start

The start and finish area will be closed to all traffic during race day May 19th and it will be hard to find parking in and around the start area. If you do decide to take the car then we recommend you to park in the city (Nordstaden, Heden, Focus, Gårda, Ullevi, Liseberg, Järntorget) and take the tram or bus to the start area. Here you will pay the regular parking fees that apply to the parking area you choose. There will also be some parking at Högsbo Industriområde (Högbo Industrial Area). You may download Göteborgs Stad parkerings app (City of Gothenburg’s parking app) for information on the number of available parking spaces in Gothenburg.

If you get a ride or lift to the starting area then Högsbo Skjutbana (Högsbo Shooting Range) is a good place to be dropped off.  The street is JA Wettergrens gata (exit Flatåsmotet). It is about a 10 minute walk to the start area from here.

For information about the current traffic and parking situation in Gothenburg (check out the website evenemangstrafiken.nu)  To find out about the traffic situation you can listen to Sveriges Radio P4 or radio 101.9 FM in Gothenburg. Note most of the updates if not all will be in Swedish.

On Saturday it is time for the Minivarvet for small children. We recommend you to take public transportation with Linnéplatsen and Botaniska Trädgården the closest stops in the area. You will find the race course beside of Björngårdsvillan.

Sunday May 20th

All eyes will be on the small and young runners when the Minivarvet and Lilla Varvet take place in Slottsskogen Park. Please not that race bibs for the Lilla Varvet can be picked up at the race area, Friidrottens Hus, on Sunday, May 20th  (if you plan on picking up race bibs to Lilla Varvet Thursday-Saturday – do so at Göteborgsvarvet Expo downtown Gothenburg).

If you are attending Lilla Varvet please use public transport – choose the bus stops Marklandsgatan, Linnéplatsen or Botaniska Trädgården (the race starts down below Bragebacken by Margretebergsgatan). Bus stops Linnéplatsen and Botaniska Trädgården (Botanical Gardens) are the closest stops to the Minivarvet (the track is beside of Björngårdsvillan).

Parking is available for a fee of 50 SEK beside of Slottsskogsvallen on the large gravel field and at Högsbo Industriområde (Högbo Industrial Area). Follow the parking volunteer’s recommended instructions so that the area is utilized in the most effective way.
