How to get to Göteborgsvarvet

Leave the car at home! The quickest and easiest way to get to the bib pick-up and the race is by walking, cycling, or using public transport.

The area around Göteborgsvarvet Expo will have limited access for cars during Varvet Week, and traffic across large parts of the city will be affected on May 23.

Please allow extra time for your journey, regardless of how you choose to travel.

    • You are encouraged to travel to Göteborgsvarvet by public transport! Services will be reinforced with additional departures during the event.
    • Plan your journey via the Västtrafik journey planner or in the “Västtrafik To Go” app.

      Closest stops to the start area: Marklandsgatan or Linnéplatsen.
    • Please note: The Botaniska Trädgården stop will be closed on Saturday, May 23, from 8:30 AM to 8 PM
    • Several lines in central Gothenburg will be affected by the race and may be rerouted. Make sure to plan your trip and check updates in the Västtrafik To Go app.
    • Private bicycles: Göteborgsvarvet offers bicycle parking at Dalens Idrottsplats, Stubbeledsgatan and Linnéplatsen. Please see the arena map for exact locations: Arena map.
    • In the cycling route planner at Trafiken.nu, you can find information on accessible routes and which pedestrian and cycle paths will be closed during the race.
    • Rental bikes (Styr & Ställ/Nextbike): The city’s bike-sharing system allows you to pick up and return bikes at stations around Gothenburg. Always check the Nextbike app for available bikes and open stations. Download the Nextbike app from the App Store or Google Play.

  • On May 23, we offer a free shuttle bus service for runners to and from Åby Arena ↔ the start and finish area. The buses are operated by our transport partner Bergkvara Buss.

    • Direct service with no stops
    • Buses run continuously between 09:00–20:00
    • At least one bus is accessible

  • Leave the car at home! Göteborgsvarvet does not provide parking at the start/finish area or along the course. Many streets will be completely closed or difficult to access.

    If you still choose to drive:

    • Expect long queues and very limited access
    • Park in other parts of the city and continue the last stretch to the start/finish area on foot or by public transport

    Parking is not allowed:

    • Along the course
    • On pedestrian and cycle paths
    • In a way that blocks residents’ entrances and exits

Traffic diversions along the Göteborgsvarvet course

Plan ahead and allow plenty of time!

There will be significant impact for all traffic between 12:00 PM–7:15 PM.

Areas along the course will be closed for the race. If you need to use your car, it must be parked outside the restricted zones. See below for details about the different areas.

Traffic diversions by area

  • Göteborgsvarvet participants start on Margretebergsgatan, which will be closed to through traffic from Thursday, May 21 at 9 AM and will reopen on Sunday, May 24 at 11 PM.

    To avoid accessibility issues, we recommend using the pedestrian and cycle path on the eastern side of Dag Hammarskjöldsleden – Änggården – Per Dubbsgatan, and vice versa.

  • If you live in the area and need to use your car, please plan your errands and activities accordingly by parking outside the restricted zone.

    Slottsskogsgatan between Högsboleden and Skytteskogsgatan will be closed on May 23 from 7 AM to 8:30 PM.

    Along the course in Majorna, traffic will be closed between 12 PM and approximately 5:15 PM.

    Älvsborg Bridge will have limited access throughout the day. Cyclists and pedestrians are directed to use the western side of the bridge.

    Västra Eriksberg will be closed between 12:30 PM and 6 PM. Östra Eriksberg, Lindholmen and Frihamnen will have road closures between 12:30 PM and approximately 6:15 PM. If you live in the area and need to use your car, please plan your errands and activities accordingly by parking outside the restricted zones.

    Hisingsbron – Cyclists and pedestrians are directed to use the eastern side of the bridge between 12:30 PM and 6:15 PM. It is recommended to choose the eastern side already from Hjalmar Brantingsplatsen.

  • The Central Station area will have severely limited accessibility for all types of traffic. If you do not have a destination within the marked area, you are advised to avoid driving here to prevent getting stuck in long queues.

    Norra Sjöfarten and Operagatan will be closed to traffic between 12:30 PM and 7 PM.

    Nordstan parking garage can be accessed via Nils Ericsonsgatan from Åkareplatsen.

    During the race, it will not be possible to cross the course in the city centre. Pedestrian crossings (“walk-through passages”) will be available along Östra Hamngatan, Kungsportsplatsen, Kungsportsavenyn and Vasagatan.

    Övre Husargatan will be closed from approximately 12:30 PM from Linnéplatsen in the direction of Vasagatan. All traffic will be diverted via Linnégatan during this time. Residents in Haga can access the area from Järntorget, with exit via Husargatan. Cyclists and pedestrians are advised to use the western side of Övre Husargatan between Skanstorget and Linnéplatsen.

  • No, the entire area is closed to e-scooters. On May 23, both parking and riding are prohibited in Slottsskogen between 7 AM and 11:30 PM.

  • The stations at Slottsskogsgatan, Marklandsgatan and Handels will be closed on May 23. The stations at Linnéplatsen and Botaniska may become full. Updated information about closed and potentially full stations is available in the Nextbike app.
