Approximately 8 Million SEK back to the local sports community!

As 2024 comes to a close, it’s clear that around 8 million SEK has been distributed to the clubs that played a crucial role in organizing some of last year’s biggest running and athletics events in Gothenburg.

These funds were generated from the races held during Varvet Week, as well as the World Masters Athletics Championships, both organized by the Gothenburg Athletics Association.

– It’s incredibly gratifying that we were once again able to give back such a strong contribution to the sports community. Without the clubs, these events would not be possible. It’s a mutual exchange – we lift each other up, says Eva-Lena Frick, CEO of the Gothenburg Athletics Association.

Göteborgsvarvet is run by the Gothenburg Athletics Association with the purpose of giving as much back as possible to local sports clubs. Throughout 2024, a large number of clubs have contributed and now share approximately 8 million SEK. Entry fees from Göteborgsvarvet and its associated races are not only used to enhance the runner experience; a significant part of the surplus is invested in running Friidrottens Hus, a training facility used year-round by thousands of children, youths, and adults. Another major portion is distributed to the clubs that provide volunteers for the races and championships.

– For decades, the clubs have been a cornerstone of our operations. Their commitment not only enables our events but also strengthens their own activities – from youth development to elite performance, says Frick.

Over 150 clubs participated in organizing Göteborgsvarvet, Lilla Varvet, Specialvarvet, Stafettvarvet, Cityvarvet, Minivarvet, Trailvarvet, Varvetmilen, and the World Masters Athletics Championships in 2024. Thousands of dedicated volunteers make these events possible year after year. Each volunteer hour translates into direct compensation for the respective club, and a portion of the overall surplus is also allocated to the Gothenburg Athletics Association and its member organizations.

– It’s a fantastic model where everyone wins – the participants, the city, and the local sports community, Frick adds.

The Gothenburg Athletics Association now looks forward to another exciting year – where recreational runners, elite athletes, and club heroes will once again create countless joyful moments through movement.

Varvet Week 2025 kicks off on May 14, with Göteborgsvarvet taking place on May 17. The Gothenburg Athletics Association will also host the Folksam Grand Prix on July 26, 2025.
