The première of Göteborgsvarvet Marathon moved to 2023
Göteborgsvarvet Marathon will take place when Gothenburg celebrates its 400 year anniversary. On September 3, 2023, thousands of runners will experience the city’s history along the 42,195 meter long track, and everyone is now able to register.
The pandemic didn’t just put a stop to the premiere of Göteborgsvarvet Marathon, but also the big birthday party the city had planned. Next year, however, both the party and a new running event will finally happen.
The start of the celebrations for Gothenburg’s 400 years will take place on June 2 and finish on September 3, when the runners of the first ever Göteborgsvarvet Marathon are sent on double laps along the streets of Gothenburg.
– The 300 year anniversary was pushed two years, to 1923. At the time, Slottsskogsvallen, Botaniska Trädgården, Liseberg, Svenska Mässan and the Gothenburg Art Museum opened. In 2023 it’s time for new events to be born. Göteborgsvarvet Marathon will make a memorable ending to the celebration. We have waited so long to celebrate our wonderful city, says Mia Samuelsson who works on the anniversary celebrations for Göteborg & Co.
Göteborgsvarvet Marathon begins in Slottsskogsvallen and the first lap is largely similar to the classic Göteborgsvarvet, while the second lap will take runners along a different route on Hisingen, on to Göteborgsoperan, Amerikahuset, Fiskhamnen and Södra Älvstranden once Hisingsbron has been demolished.
– A new race is always fun, and this is one that enhances and improves on the events already offered in Gothenburg. Next year we will experience a huge party for runners both in the spring when Göteborgsvarvet happens, and in the autumn when Göteborgsvarvet Marathon takes place and thousands of runners will visit the city, says Madeleine Eriksson who works with regular events at Göteborg & Co.
Even before the official registrations have begun more than 8,000 runners have already signed up for Göteborgsvarvet Marathon 2023, as many of those who had signed up for the race in 2021 decided to move their participation.
– Just as Göteborgsvarvet has made a big mark both nationally and internationally, Göteborgsvarvet Marathon will become an appreciated event among enthusiasts and elite runners. It’s extra special that we get to do this in connection with the 400-year anniversary of Gothenburg. We will run through the anniversary park twice and get to show off the very best of our beautiful city, says Göteborgsvarvet event manager Erik Bergkvist.
The medal that everyone who completes Göteborgsvarvet Marathon will receive is designed by jeweler Carolina Claesson from HDK. One of Gothenburg’s most classic expressions, the city coat of arms, is surrounded by a wreath.
