24 Laps Around the World and 64 Nations. Göteborgsvarvet 2026 by the Numbers

55,000 runners signed up for the 21-kilometre challenge on 23 May, when this year’s Göteborgsvarvet took place. That’s an impressive number in itself, but behind it lies an even more fascinating collection of facts and figures.

Together, you ran 24 laps around the world
When all this year's finishers are added together, the total distance covered equals approximately 24 laps around the Earth at the equator. Or, if you prefer to think even bigger: almost two and a half trips to the Moon.

Finish line after 11 years
If you added together every result from this year's race, as if the runners had completed the Göteborgsvarvet one after another without a break, the race wouldn't have finished until more than 11 years later.

Now that's a long run!

64 nations on the start line
This year's Göteborgsvarvet welcomed runners from 64 different nations. Participants travelled from all over the world, from our Nordic neighbours to long-distance visitors representing countries such as Vanuatu, Japan, the Philippines, New Zealand and Kenya.

Three cheers for the women… and for Belgium and Norrbotten
Among the younger age groups, women lead the way. In the 21–25 age group, women made up 55% of participants, while in the 26–30 age group they accounted for 51%.

A few countries stood out for their strong female representation. Belgium, Czechia, Spain and the United States all sent more women than men to this year's race.

Within Sweden, the counties of Dalarna, Gävleborg, Norrbotten, Uppsala and Västerbotten also had more female than male participants.

A special shout-out to all of you!

Nearly 10 tonnes disappeared along the course
Together, participants burned an incredible amount of energy during this year's Göteborgsvarvet. If that energy expenditure were converted into body weight, it would equal approximately 9.5 tonnes – the equivalent weight of around 170 average adults disappearing between the start and finish lines.

SEK 200 million back to grassroots sport
Thanks to everyone who has taken part, Göteborgsvarvet has contributed approximately SEK 200 million to local sports clubs and community sport since the race began in 1980.

Tens of thousands of personal victories
24 laps around the world. 64 nations. Nearly one million kilometres.

It's easy to focus on finishing times, placings and records. But perhaps the most impressive number of all is that tens of thousands of people chose to stand on the start line.

Thank you for running, cheering, volunteering and making Göteborgsvarvet 2026 another race to remember.
